HEALTH CLASSES for 2009

WHEN: Each Thursday, April 16th - June 4th
12:00 -1:30 pm OR 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Join us for 8 weeks of nutritional guidance, education, accountability, and support! This program is designed to stop the cycle of yo-yo dieting and calorie restrictions. Based on the low-glycemic index, this program focuses on eating for nutrition, resetting your body's metabolism, and addressing the challenges of health and weight loss.

Losing weight is not just a matter of reducing the amount of food you eat. Low glycemic index foods help your body burn more body fat plus they have the added advantage of filling you up and keep you from getting hungry. Studies have shown that even when calorie intake is the same, you can lose more weight eating low GI foods vs. high GI foods.

Each week we will watch a short DVD and discuss topics like: Jump Start Your Succes, Stress and Your Weight, Plateaus, Good Fats, Bad Fats and more. Recipes, grocery shopping, meal planning, reading lables, and finding an exercise program to fit into your lifestyle are some of issues we will find solutions for together. The first session will include recording your total weight, % of fat, % of muscle, % of water and you will receive a Daily Journal and Low-Glycemic Food Index book.

Optional (free for class members): Electral Dermal Screening and Symptom Survey to determine if your thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands are balanced and if your metabolism, liver, or digestive pathways are sluggish. Supplements are not included BUT you are not obligated to purchase them to be tested. EDS testing for new clients is $150 and retesting is $75 so you are getting a great deal and I am getting the satisfaction of knowing that I have done everything I can to make sure your weight-loss efforts are maximized.

8-week Program Cost: Only $250 which includes 12 hours of nutritional guidance and education, a Daily Journal, Low-Glycemic Food Index book, EDS testing, and a Symptom Survey analysis.

Class Size: Maximum class size is 10 but a minimum of 4 per class is required or I will need to reschedule. If you are interested in one-on-one guidance please call the office and schedule a consultation.

Why High Fructose Corn Syrup IS Worse For You than Sugar

If you need to lose weight, or if you want to avoid diabetes and heart disease, fructose is one type of sugar you’ll want to avoid, particularly in the form of high-fructose corn syrup. Part of what makes HFCS such a dangerous sweetener is that it is metabolized to fat in your body far more rapidly than any other sugar.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Parks, associate professor of clinical nutrition at UT Southwestern Medical Center and lead author of a study on fructose, published in the Journal of Nutrition just last year:

"Our study shows for the first time the surprising speed with which humans make body fat from fructose. Once you start the process of fat synthesis from fructose, it's hard to slow it down. The bottom line of this study is that fructose very quickly gets made into fat in your body."

This occurs because most fats are formed in your liver, and when sugar enters your liver, it decides whether to store it, burn it or turn it into fat. Fructose, however, bypasses this process and simply turns into fat.

Over the past 20 years 120 published research studies have been conducted on the value of a low GI-diet. There are two link that are particularly noteworthy: www.mendosa.com/diabetes.htm and www.glycemicindex.com. In addition to this you may want to read: "The Glucose Revolution…An authoritative Guide to The Glycemic Index" co-authored by J. Brand-Miller, Phd. and T. Wolever, M.D., Phd., who are two of the world's foremost authorities on the low GI-diet.

Eating a lot of high GI foods can be detrimental to your health because it pushes your body to extremes. This is especially true if you are overweight and sedentary. Switching to eating mainly low GI carbs that slowly trickle glucose into your blood stream keeps your energy levels balanced and means you will feel fuller for longer between meals.

  • Low GI diets help people lose and control weight
  • Low GI diets increase the body's sensitivity to insulin
  • Low GI carbs improve diabetes control
  • Low GI carbs reduce the risk of heart disease
  • Low GI carbs reduce blood cholesterol levels
  • Low GI carbs can help you manage the symptoms of PCOS
  • Low GI carbs reduce hunger and keep you fuller for longer
  • Low GI carbs prolong physical endurance
  • High GI carbs help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise
